The Cognition of Basic Musical Structures by David Temperley,

The Cognition of Basic Musical Structures by David Temperley,
In this book David Temperley addresses a fundamental question about music cognition: how do we extract basic kinds of musical information, such as meter, phrase structure, counterpoint, pitch spelling, harmony, and key from music as we hear it? Taking a computational approach, Temperley develops models for generating these aspects of musical structure. The models he proposes are based on "preference rules, which are criteria for evaluating a possible structural analysis of a piece of music. A preference rule system evaluates many possible interpretations and chooses the one that best satisfies the rules. After an introductory chapter, Temperley presents preference rule systems for generating six basic kinds of musical structure: meter, phrase structure, contrapuntal structure, harmony, and key, as well as pitch spelling (the labeling of pitch events with spellings such as A flat or G sharp). He suggests that preference rule systems not only show how musical structures are inferred, but also shed light on other aspects of music. He substantiates this claim with discussions of musical ambiguity, retrospective revision, expectation, and music outside the Western canon (rock and traditional African music). He proposes a framework for the description of musical styles based on preference rule systems and explores the relevance of preference rule systems to higher-level aspects of music, such as musical schemata, narrative and drama, and musical tension.

Structural and Civil Engineering Drafting by David L. Goetsch,
Structural and Civil Engineering Drafting by David L. Goetsch,
For nearly twenty years, David Goetsch has provided a one-of-a-kind information resource with his book, Structural Drafting. Now, for a broader audience, he has developed a new and complete introduction to structural drafting with related coverage of civil and piping drafting that has complementary software. Structural, Civil and Pipe Drafting for CAD Technicians is organized into seven sections. The first section of the book supplies readers with an overview of structural drafting, from the organizational structure of the typical department through product fabrication and shipping. Later sections invite readers to hone in on the specifics of structural steel, pre-cast concrete, poured-in-place concrete, and structural wood drafting. Section six includes chapters on pre-fab metal buildings, civil engineering drafting, and process piping to ensure that readers gain all of the expertise they need to become highly competent, professional drafters.

Tensile structure - A tensile structure is a building that is made from materials under tension — This could be a Cable net supporting a fabric or sheet material, or it could be made entirely from fabric. Most often used just for the roof of a building it is a relatively new form of construction.

Tensile architecture - Tensile architecture is a relatively new field of architecture devoted to lightweight membrane structures. Composed primarily of fabric tent-like structures, this form of architecture is well suited for sheltering large areas, such as stadiums, arenas, outdoor shelters, and airport terminals.

Filament winding - Filament winding is a fabrication technique for creating composite material structures. The process involves winding filaments under tension over a male mould or mandrel.

Syntagmatic structure - Syntagmatic structure (structure of syntax) is "the mode of time-awareness which listeners are placed" such as 'narrative', 'epic', or 'lyrical'. Narrative structures feature a realistic temporal flow guided by tension and relaxation, privilege difference, and "as diegesis, songs speak to or address us by organizing a particular stretch of time into a conscious experience, and an experience of consciousness" (Cubitt 1984, p.

Fabrication Fiberglass - Fabrication Fiberglass Fabrication plant - A fabrication plant (or fab) in computer manufacturing describes a large factory which manufactures microchips out of silicon wafers. Fabrication plants can cost billions of dollars. Fiberglass - Fiberglass or fibreglass is material made from extremely fine fibers of glass. It is used as a reinforcing agent for many plastic products; the resulting composite material, properly known as glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) or glass-fiber reinforced epoxy (GRE), is called "fiberglass" in popular usage.
